Project description

The project aims to develop the first clinical OCT scanner for dental applications. This groundbreaking device will enable fast, high-resolution imaging of surfaces and volumetric structures in less than a minute, addressing the main limitations of existing OCT prototypes, such as motion sensitivity, low scanning speed, and lack of accurate metric measurements.

The research will focus on designing a fast OCT system capable of scanning up to eight times faster than currently available solutions. The project also includes miniaturization and integration of OCT with an AI-based position tracking sensor. A key element will be the synchronization and interpolation of OCT volume data with surface data from a moving object. Methods will be developed to estimate the position of the scanner based on surface data and to use this data to correct motion artifacts and obtain accurate, clinically useful 3D reconstructions.

The project is being carried out in cooperation between the Wrocław University of Science and Technology (Poland) and Zaamigo AG from Zurich (Switzerland). The Wrocław team is responsible for the development of OCT equipment, based on its experience in laser systems and biomedical optics. Zaamigo contributes its expertise in AI, computer vision, and dental imaging.

The project will also have a significant social impact. Thanks to fast, accurate, and non-invasive diagnostics, it will be possible to detect oral diseases earlier, reduce treatment costs, and improve access to high-quality dental care. The results will be widely disseminated through publications, conferences, and open platforms, in line with the idea of open science and international cooperation.
